White River Chinook runs rising through collaborative efforts, operational changes

SEATTLE – The White River’s 2016 Chinook salmon run numbers were the best seen in 71 years until 2017’s run. Runs consistently averaged 1,565 in the early 2000s, but 2017’s count as of mid-October was 15,565, a 67 percent increase from 2016’s 9,347 total. [Read More]

Chittenden Locks Large chamber closed Nov. 6-22

SEATTLE – The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is scheduled to close to all marine traffic from 9 p.m., Nov. 6, to 8 p.m., Nov. 22, for annual maintenance. The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width throughout the large lock maintenance period. Army Corps ready to respond as Western Washington rivers on flood watch

Seattle District will begin dredging in La Push, WA

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor is staging equipment near La Push, Washington, in anticipation for upcoming dredging operations. Portable Hydraulic Dredging, LLC, from Anchorage, Alaska, is scheduled to start Sept. 29 on the $1.7 million project. The company will dredge about 60,000 cubic yards, working until December, barring weather delays. [Read More]

Army Corps of Engineers waives fees on National Public Lands Day, Sept. 30

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 30. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. Other agencies and partners that manage recreation areas located on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to comply with this waiver of day use fees in the areas they manage. [Read More]

Chittenden Locks large lock to close 4 hours Oct. 3 and all day Oct. 11

The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will close to all marine traffic from 8 a.m. until noon October 3 and from 11 p.m. October 10 until midnight October 11. The October 3 closure allows Navy divers to safely clean the maintenance gate seals. The 25-hour shutdown, beginning at 11 p.m. October 10, allows maintenance staff to test the new large pump’s dewatering capabilities. [Read More]

Seattle District begins to deploy local employees for Harvey recovery

A local Seattle District expert, normally a construction manager at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, is traveling today to Louisiana to provide technical commodity distribution planning, training and management support to FEMA at the Regional Response Coordination Center and Initial Operating Facility to support federal Harvey recovery efforts.
