  • Chittenden Locks large chamber limited to half lockages, small lock closed

    The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks large chamber is limited to half lockages because of a power outage. Maintenance crews are working to restore power and lock wall crews are working to get vessels through as efficiently as possible.
  • Chittenden Locks small chamber closed for unscheduled maintenance

    The small lock chamber is closed to marine traffic this week with reopening possible by September 13. All vessels will use the large lock and boaters should be prepared with appropriate equipment and crew.
  • Chittenden Locks to close 8 hours May 29

    The large and small locks will close to all marine traffic eight hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 29 to inspect and close a saltwater drain screen structure.
  • Chittenden Locks small chamber closing 2 weeks for annual maintenance

    SEATTLE – The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks small chamber will close to marine traffic noon, March 5 through 5 p.m., March 16. Crews will conduct maintenance and safety inspections during the small chamber closure. Foot traffic will not be affected and the large lock will continue around-the-clock operations for vessels. Lock wall staff will get commercial traffic through as quickly as possible.
  • Army Corps services curtailed and sites closed due to funding lapse

    The Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is curtailing some services and closing its campgrounds and day-use parks nationwide beginning today, due to the lack of fiscal 2018 funding legislation.
  • Chittenden Locks Large chamber closed Nov. 6-22

    SEATTLE – The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is scheduled to close to all marine traffic from 9 p.m., Nov. 6, to 8 p.m., Nov. 22, for annual maintenance. The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width throughout the large lock maintenance period. Mariners may experience delays, depending on passage demand.
  • Chittenden Locks large lock to close 4 hours Oct. 3 and all day Oct. 11

    The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will close to all marine traffic from 8 a.m. until noon October 3 and from 11 p.m. October 10 until midnight October 11. The October 3 closure allows Navy divers to safely clean the maintenance gate seals. The 25-hour shutdown, beginning at 11 p.m. October 10, allows maintenance staff to test the new large pump’s dewatering capabilities.
  • Chittenden Locks large chamber closed August 24

    The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is closed to all marine traffic today due to an unexpected hydraulics problem. Mechanics are working on the problem, but don’t yet have an estimated time when the large lock can be put back in service. The small lock will be available for vessels throughout the large lock closure. Mariners will be notified when the large lock returns to service.

    SEATTLE – Join Corps Natural Resource Management staff for a Fisheries Day 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 17 at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. Twenty federal, tribal, state and local governments, and other organizations and groups are scheduled to offer information and activities about salmon and other environmental aspects.
