Chittenden Locks Large chamber closed Nov. 6-22

SEATTLE – The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is scheduled to close to all marine traffic from 9 p.m., Nov. 6, to 8 p.m., Nov. 22, for annual maintenance. The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width throughout the large lock maintenance period. Mariners may experience delays, depending on passage demand. [Read More]

Chittenden Locks large lock to close 4 hours Oct. 3 and all day Oct. 11

The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will close to all marine traffic from 8 a.m. until noon October 3 and from 11 p.m. October 10 until midnight October 11. The October 3 closure allows Navy divers to safely clean the maintenance gate seals. The 25-hour shutdown, beginning at 11 p.m. October 10, allows maintenance staff to test the new large pump’s dewatering capabilities. [Read More]

Chittenden Locks large chamber closed August 24

The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is closed to all marine traffic today due to an unexpected hydraulics problem. Mechanics are working on the problem, but don’t yet have an estimated time when the large lock can be put back in service. The small lock will be available for vessels throughout the large lock closure. Mariners will be notified when the large lock returns to service. [Read More]

Chittenden Locks help juvenile salmon on journey to Puget Sound

SEATTLE – Studies have shown it’s no easy task for juvenile salmon to make it through the Lake Washington basin to Puget Sound and one of the obstacles they must pass is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard. Although salmon have been navigating the 100-year-old Locks for as long as it’s been operating, studies in the 1990s indicated they were having a difficult time. The Lock’s primary passage routes were deep in the water column, not easily found by juvenile salmon which stay closer to the surface. [Read More]
