Chittenden Locks hosting Centennial Art Show beginning Aug 17

Published Aug. 9, 2017

SEATTLE – SPLASH! An Art Show is coming to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard beginning with an opening gala 6 to 8 p.m., August 17.

Twenty-eight artists will display nearly 50 works in the Administration Building and Visitor’s Center if more space is needed. All works are inspired by, or related to, the Locks or its Centennial and on display through September 15. The Administration Building is open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The gala will include children’s activities and STRUM – Seattle’s Totally Relaxed Ukulele Musicians – will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Art will be available for sale through Discover Your Northwest (DYNW), the Locks’ non-profit partner. A portion of sales will support The Corps Foundation and DYNW’s proposed fish ladder renovation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, built the Locks, which officially opened July 4, 1917. Throughout 2017, several organizations and the Corps hosted events around Seattle and at the Locks to commemorate the Centennial. The Corps also helped produce several videos, available on their YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/user/SeattleDistrictUSACE, about the Locks, their history and the effects on Seattle and the surrounding area.

There are many events still happening, including the Horseless Carriage Car Show 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 12 and the 28th Annual Free Summer Concert Series. Check out the schedule at www.nws.usace.army.mil/locks100 for details.

All events are open to the public. Limited concert seating is available on a first-come basis, but blankets or lawn chairs and picnic lunches are welcome with plenty of space on the grounds. All concerts and events are subject to change.
