Scraping Barnacles Gives Salmon A Fighting Chance
A Corps of Engineers employee scrapes barnacle buildup along the filling tunnels at Lake Washington Ship Canal and Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Seattle, Dec. 12, 2023. Strong water currents passing through the large locks pull juvenile salmon (smolts) around corners and through small spaces. Removing the sharp barnacle shells leaves a smoother surface that can decrease injury or death to smolts.
