FACT SHEET: Snohomish River Federal Dredging Project

Dredging Operations:

  • The project area is in Snohomish River, Everett, Snohomish County, Washington.
  • Maintenance dredging operations will begin 18 December 2022 and are expected to be completed 14 February 2023.
  • Maintenance dredging is necessary for safe navigation conditions for Snohomish River and Everett Harbor. 
  • Maintenance dredging operations will involve removing approx. 190,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment from Snohomish River.
  • Before dredging operations begin, the material is tested and a biological evaluation is prepared to ensure the sediment is suitable for open water disposal, in compliance with the Endangered Species Act.
  • Accumulated sediment will be placed on a barge and disposed of at the Dept. of Natural Resources Port Gardner open water disposal site.

Project Details:

  • Project contract was awarded to American Construction Co. Inc., Tacoma Washington.
  • Dredging will start 18 December 2022 and continue through 14 February 2023.
  • Work will occur 24 hours/day and 7 days per week (Sun – Sat).

Community Concerns:

  • This project has been coordinated with and approved by US Army Corps of Engineers, Washington State Department of Ecology, and the Port of Everett.
  • Environmental coordination with state and Federal agencies has been completed.
  • No impacts to wetlands, biological resources, or water quality are expected.
  • Boaters in the area should slow down, pass on the marina side of the dredge, pay attention to rig markings, avoid and be cautious around the dredging operations.
  • Noise during dredging will be minimal. However, residents need to be aware that noise can be amplified and travels long distance over water.
