SEATTLE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, began repairs on two sections of levee totaling 1,700 feet of damage, within Diking District 1, at a cost of about $938,000.
Repairs began on August 6th with all in-water work expected to be complete by August 31, the end of the “fish window” when construction crews can work in the water with the least amount of disruption to fish.
Damage to the levee occurred in November 2017. High flows occurred on the Skagit River with a peak flow of 90,200 cubic feet per second at the Skagit River near Mt. Vernon U.S. Geological Survey gage 12200500.
Construction-related traffic disruptions may be present in the area of Memorial Highway and Valley View Drive.
Once repaired, the levee will be restored to its pre-flood 50-year level of protection in order to protect lives and property from subsequent flooding in the ensuing flood seasons.
