Chittenden Locks large chamber reopens for full lockages

Published Dec. 3, 2019

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks large chamber opened on schedule for full lockages at 6 a.m. December 3.

The chamber opened for half lockages a few days early on November 30. The large chamber closed October 12 to replace the first of six Stoney gate valves that are original to the 102-year-old locks.

The next scheduled closure for the Stoney Gate Valve project is February 12 through April 5. Work to replace the valves had never been done before. With the first one complete, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials are working with the contractor to look for ways to shorten the next closure to help reduce impacts to the Seattle maritime community.
