Army Corps opening Libby Dam Campgrounds

Published May 22, 2020

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) officials at Libby Dam will open Blackwell Flats and Dunn Creek Flats Campgrounds Friday afternoon, May 22, 2020, in time for Memorial Day weekend.

While the campgrounds, boat ramps and day-use areas are open, the Libby Dam Visitor Center and Dam Tours will remain closed until further notice. Special Events have been cancelled or rescheduled for the fall. Picnic Shelters also remain closed, with no reservations available for now. Individual picnic tables are still available.

When visiting USACE recreation areas, visitors are encouraged to practice social distancing and other COVID-19 safety precautions required and recommended by local, state and federal authorities, to include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC guidance on visiting parks and recreation facilities can be found online at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/visitors.html.

Visitors are reminded that cleanliness of facilities is a shared responsibility.  Please plan ahead and be prepared to be self-sufficient in maintaining personal hygiene.

Meanwhile, critical operations staff continue working at the facility supporting water management and hydropower production for the region. For daily flow information and lake levels, visit the Libby Dam website at https://www.nws.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Locks-and-Dams/Libby-Dam/

Libby Dam staff are committed to doing their part to help keep our region healthy and combat further spread of COVID-19. Please do your part to help slow the spread by observing social distancing, limiting group size and practicing “leave no trace” when recreating outdoors. #recreateresponsibly

“In the best interest of our visitors, volunteers and Corps staff we feel it is necessary to delay opening some of our facilities at Libby Dam until it is safe for everyone.” said Josh Baltz, Libby Dam Natural Resource Manager. “We are disappointed we aren’t able to serve the public in our normal capacity at this time, but our Natural Resource staff is anxiously awaiting when we can safely reopen all our facilities for the public to enjoy.”  The public’s patience and understanding during this unprecedented time is appreciated.
