• Corps of Engineers awards $48 million contract for Central Treatment Plant upgrades in Idaho’s Silver Valley

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract May 26 to upgrade and expand the currently operating Central Treatment Plant at the Bunker Hill Superfund site near Kellogg, Idaho. The work is part of a required remedial action under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s larger efforts to clean up toxic contamination in the basin.

    After careful consideration of all the information available to him, Seattle District Commander Col. John Buck has determined the potential impacts to the Lummi Nation’s usual and accustomed (U&A) fishing rights from the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal are greater than de minimis. Because the district has determined the effects to the Lummi’s rights are more than de minimis and because the Lummi maintain their objections to this proposal, the project cannot be permitted by the Corps.

    Washington state’s first joint wetland and fish habitat bank was signed into operation May 5. This landmark event certifies that the 302-acre mitigation bank along the Coweeman River will now protect wetland functions and create habitat for several life-stages of salmon.

  • Weatherwax wetland bank certified to run in Ocean Shores

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Washington Department of Ecology have certified the operation of a wetland mitigation bank on land owned by the City of Ocean Shores located within the city boundaries in Grays Harbor County. The new 121.86 acre Weatherwax Wetland and Habitat Bank will preserve and enhance a rare and unique ecosystem within the city of Ocean Shores.

The 45-day public comment period is from March 25 to May 9, 2016.
