    Water managers at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are planning to operate Albeni Falls Dam to hold Lake Pend Oreille to within half a foot of a lake level of 2,061 feet above sea level by the end of September.
  • Summer pedestrian walkway closures at Chittenden Locks in Ballard to begin

    The first of several pedestrian walkway closures along the spillway dam this summer at Chittenden Locks in Ballard is scheduled 9 a.m. Monday, June 16. Closure could last up to several hours. Commuters must cross before that time. Visitors to the fish ladder only should park near Commodore Park in Magnolia. All other visitors park on the Ballard side. Intermittent temporary pedestrian walkway closures will continue through the end of August 2014 for removal and replacement of the six tainter spillway gates at the Chittenden Locks. Navigation through the Chittenden Locks is not affected and will continue as usual.

    Above normal rain and snow is creating a situation where the peak Lake Pend Oreille elevation and peak Pend Oreille River flows downstream of Albeni Falls Dam are likely to exceed flood stage as early as next week.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement to examine the incremental environmental risk, principally from vessel traffic, related to operation of the previously authorized addition of the North Wing to the BP Cherry Point dock, near Ferndale, Wash. The comment period for the draft EIS begins June 6 and closes Aug. 6, 2014. The Corps will hold public meetings in Bellingham and Seattle on July 16 and 24 respectively. Both written and oral scoping comments will be considered in the preparation of the final EIS.
  • World Fish Migration Day celebrated at Chittenden Locks in Ballard

    The Chittenden Locks in Ballard invites visitors to celebrate World Fish Migration Day from noon to 4 p.m. May 24. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will set up tables and be accompanied by Chittenden Locks’ staff to provide interactive learning activities about fish passage, the salmon life cycle and more.
