Chittenden Locks large chamber closed

Published Dec. 22, 2019

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks large chamber is closed to all marine traffic because of electrical issues.

The large chamber was limited to half lockages December 21 due to possible debris stuck under one of the miter gates. Unrelated electrical issues have put the large chamber out of service.

“Maintenance is working to resolve both issues and we hope to have it back up and running in a few days,” said Operations Project Manager Jon Hofstra.

The small chamber is still operating. Vessels up to 28-feet wide by 123-feet long are able to lock through the small chamber.

The small chamber is scheduled to close January 6-24 for annual maintenance. The large chamber is scheduled to close February 12-April 5 for the second extended closure for the Stoney Gate Valve project.
