    A public meeting to inform stakeholders on the large lock center gate replacement project is scheduled for February 15, 2023, at Lake Washington Ship Canal and Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Seattle, Washington.

    Federal government puts limits on vessel calls, crude oil volume handled at BP Cherry Point Marine Terminal

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will modify the Department of the Army permit for the BP Cherry Point Marine Terminal’s North Wing dock. Modification will ensure the permit complies with the Magnuson Amendment’s restrictions regarding the handling of crude oil at Puget Sound facilities, and Endangered Species Act and other applicable legal requirements through additional permit conditions. This comes from the Record of Decision issued Monday, following completion of a Final Environmental Impact Statement released last August evaluating the potential impacts of the North Wing’s continued operation.

    Chittenden Locks updates large locks extended closure schedule

    Chittenden Locks large lock will be closed to all vessel traffic during specific periods in 2023 and 2024 to facilitate demolition, concrete construction, and installation and commissioning of the new miter gates. The small lock will remain open during these periods. Closure dates may change as the project schedule is finalized.

    Whatcom County levee repair to start Saturday

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District is responding to a levee breach along the Nooksack River near Slater Road in Whatcom County, Washington. The district activated its Emergency Operations Center yesterday to oversee the work and continue to provide technical assistance to communities affected by flood and king tide related impacts.

    President signs 2023 NDAA authorizing USACE to move forward on major Seattle-area projects

    President Joe Biden signed the 2022 Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA) December 23, which lawmakers included in the $858 billion National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2023. This action includes authorizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with planning a downstream fish passage facility at Howard A. Hanson Dam in King County, Washington and a wider and deeper waterway in Tacoma, Washington.

    Chittenden Locks schedules Large Lock closures, Small Lock available

    Army Corps will begin large lock center gate repairs in 2023. Large lock will close to all vessel traffic during specified periods. Extended closures will facilitate demolition, concrete construction, and installation and commissioning of the new miter gates. Small locks will be available.

    Army Corps will begin maintenance dredging operations on the lower settling basin of Everett Harbor and Snohomish River Dec. 18, 2022. Operations will run 24/7 and are expected to be completed by Feb 14, 2023.
