  • Chittenden Locks to close 8 hours May 29

    The large and small locks will close to all marine traffic eight hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 29 to inspect and close a saltwater drain screen structure.
  • Chittenden Locks small chamber closing 2 weeks for annual maintenance

    SEATTLE – The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks small chamber will close to marine traffic noon, March 5 through 5 p.m., March 16. Crews will conduct maintenance and safety inspections during the small chamber closure. Foot traffic will not be affected and the large lock will continue around-the-clock operations for vessels. Lock wall staff will get commercial traffic through as quickly as possible.
  • Corps authorizes Lyman floodplain study

    SEATTLE – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials approved a Flood Plain Management Study for the town of Lyman, Washington, and provided the Seattle District $40,000 to complete it. Three Lyman homes were deemed unsafe by local officials in November following erosion along the Skagit River during a flood November 23-25. Town and Skagit County officials requested Corps of Engineers’ assistance during the flood but public infrastructure was not threatened, a requirement for USACE aid.
  • Corps water managers take flood control management of three dams

    SEATTLE – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water managers from the Seattle District’s Reservoir Control Center are regulating flows for Wynoochee, Ross and Upper Baker Dams. The engineers began regulating the flows for the Western Washington dams November 21 at Wynoochee and November 22 at Upper Baker and Ross. Corps operation of these utility-owned projects occurs during flood events per established protocols.
  • White River Chinook runs rising through collaborative efforts, operational changes

    SEATTLE – The White River’s 2016 Chinook salmon run numbers were the best seen in 71 years until 2017’s run. Runs consistently averaged 1,565 in the early 2000s, but 2017’s count as of mid-October was 15,565, a 67 percent increase from 2016’s 9,347 total.
  • Chittenden Locks Large chamber closed Nov. 6-22

    SEATTLE – The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is scheduled to close to all marine traffic from 9 p.m., Nov. 6, to 8 p.m., Nov. 22, for annual maintenance. The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width throughout the large lock maintenance period. Mariners may experience delays, depending on passage demand.
  • Army Corps ready to respond as Western Washington rivers on flood watch

    SEATTLE—The Emergency Operations Center at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is activated and on extended shifts until further notice as flood watches and warnings have been issued for Western Washington rivers. Rivers are expected to crest Saturday night into Sunday.
